Southpaw movie review | Its not the sport, its the story. (Spoiler free)
No not like the movie RUSH, not even FOXCATCHER. Even though these movies were not about the sport, yeah the sport was there but it was just the medium to tell the incredible story.
SOUTHPAW.
This is the movie directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Kurt Sutter writer of the show Sons of Anarchy. Revolving around a boxer Billy Hope who is at the end of his career, brilliantly played by Jake Gyllenhaal. This guy has grown out to be a man. I remember him from The Day After Tomorrow , he was just a little kid and now. His last year's NIGHTCRAWLER gave us a shivers and new kind of creep. His body formation from Nightcrawler (Oct 2014) to Southpaw (July 2015) is tremendously unbelievable. He is now under the category of those hard working actors who do everything to maintain the shape, the movie needs, respect for Jake Gyllenhaal.
From Trailers we knew, that he is angry boxer who wins his fights by taking the punches first, and then rises to knock down his opponent. His wife Maureen Hope, played by Rachel McAdams takes care of him and his daughter Leila. There is always a revolting next guy who is equally skillful and wants to take that player down. Here we have, Miguel Escobar played by Miguel Gomez who challenges him in front of media for a match. Next thing you know, at the end of the conference session, the two players wrestle and the gunfire drops the silence in the hall. Maureen is left on the ground with a punctured bullet hole in the belly and the life of Billy Hope is forever changed.
This all happens in just 29 minutes. Even if you are distracted, this movie will stick you in and make your eyes wet. Rachel McAdams played this part beautifully, she is made to do these type of roles, not the 'True Detective'. What this movie did in these 29 minutes can't be matched by six hours of character development of The Amazing Spider Movies (Gwen).
The movie is about hard ships, coping with death, managing your anger, being a single parent, rising to stardom , losing the stardom, losing the love. As the story unfolds, you try to guess the next scene and you can't. But then the next scene happens, and its the most logical thing that could have happened in the movie. The dialogues were very subtle and felt like conversations. Jake performed one of the best career defining roles of his life.
50 cent was in the movie and played Jordan Mains, Billy's manager. I didn't notice him much. He was good! I guess!
Southpaw is one of the best movies that came in 2015 and is a must watch. One shouldn't ignore it for the Sport genre. Its a lot more than meets the eye.
